An All-Time Pop-Up Classic Rig BIG Carp Can't Handle | Roo Abbott

Want to be different with your carp rigs? Why not try this forgotten pop-up classic - the Withy Pool? It might not be used as much these days, but it still is phenomenally effective, as Roo Abbott explains...

Withy Pool Rig

Steve Renyard’s Withy Pool Rig is up there with the most aggressive hooking pop-up presentations of all-time. Born at the notoriously tricky Withy Pool in 1990s, this rig has gone on to fool numbers of huge carp all over the place.

Here’s how I tie this beautiful presentation with our Terminal Tackle Components…

  1. Start by taking a length of 25lb Blend Coated Hooklink.
  2. Tie this to a size 4 Colne-V Needle Point Hook with a four-turn Grinner Knot.
  3. Slip on a long length of Simply Shrink Tube and slide down the hooklink over the eye of the hook.
  4. Steam a steady curve in the Shrink Tube with a kettle.
  5. Add a size 18 Micro Ring Swivel to the Hook, followed by a Long Distance Hookbead.
  6. Add a 50mm Blend Tungsten Anti Tangle Sleeve to the other end of the rig.
  7. Finish with a Twisted Figure-of-Eight Loop Knot.
  8. Floss on your favourite pop-up.
  9. Add a big dollop of Blend Putty just below the Shrink Tube.
  10. Cast in the pond and catch a monster!

This superb rig can be fished in all kinds of scenarios, it has even been used to good effect inside Solid PVA Bags. Certainly one to add to your armoury if you think they might be getting away with it on Chods, Hinges or Spinners.
