How Long Should You Leave Your Carp Rigs Out For? | Mike Payne

Having confidence in your Carp Rigs is absolutely essential if you want to leave them out in the pond for a long time. In this short article and video, OMC's Mike Payne highlights a Rig he left in the water for over 24-hours that went on to catch him the biggest carp in the lake...

How long would you leave a Rig in the water for? There's no doubt you need confidence in the presentation to leave it out much longer than a few hours.

So many things could have happened; has it tangled? Did a fish or bird pick it up and shake the Hook? Has it reset itself? There's so much that could have gone wrong, you might just be wasting your time behind a 'busted' Rig.

This is all why, for long periods, I use the simple Coated Braid D-Rig, here's how I tie it...

  1. Strip 10-inches of 35lb Blend Coated Braid.
  2. Grab a Size 2 Needle Point Colne V Hook.
  3. Start forming your 'D' by tying the Whipping Knot. To do this make a loop and wrap it around the shank twice before pulling tight.
  4. Move the Whipping Knot into position by sliding it down opposite the barb.
  5. Thread on a Vitabitz Size 18 Micro Ring Swivel and slide the tag end back through the Hook eye.
  6. Perform a traditional Knotless Knot to secure the Hook in place.
  7. Slide down a Dazzlers Aligner to create a better hooking angler and fleck of colour.
  8. Add a Blend Tungsten Anti Tangle Sleeve.
  9. Tie a Twisted Figure of Eight Loop Knot to complete the Rig.
  10. Remember to balance that Hookbait and pin down the Hooklink with the awesome Blend Tungsten Putty.

I like to fish this Rig with a balanced Hookbait, but not a Wafter. I do this by drilling out a Hardened Bottom Bait and plugging it with Cork. You want the Hook to lay flat on the bottom, so when a carp sucks at it, it reacts perfectly natural and shoots back into their mouth.

If you're planning on leaving a Rig in the water a long time, give this one a go!
