Three Personal Best Carp In Two Weeks - How I did it... | Sam Sheryn
Sometimes in Carp Fishing every trip just seems to go right, and that is certainly the case for Sam Sheryn at the moment, who has just landed his third UK 40lb-plus fish in just two weeks from two different venues. In his words, here's how he did it...
What a fortnight it’s been on the fishing front, not only have I beaten my PB once, not twice, but for a third time with now a stunning and huge mirror weighing in at 45lb 2oz.
This is my third 40lb-plus UK Carp in two weeks and not only a big fish, but a stunning dark mirror to add to the photo album - one of the largest fish in the lake!
This was the biggest of three from the session for me at Junction 12 Lake.
I managed to get second in the draw, meaning I was able to get on my initial chosen swim. A big open water area with great marginal options and overhanging trees, with fish showing there too and the wind later moving into the main bowl of the lake.
With ample weed, I spent the first two hours looking for the perfect spots for the 48-hours. I managed to find a beauty of a spot within a weedbed at only 10 wraps out, so I decided to fish two Rods just off that and a third on a clear spot down the margin.
My initial baiting approach was 15 Spods on the two rods and three Catapult loads on the marginal spot. With another 10 Spods just before dark.
In the early hours, my left-hand rod screamed off, with the fish finding itself stuck in the weed for about 10 minutes. I finally managed to get it out and then into the net, realising it was a chunk!
An hour later, my Rod screamed off again with a smaller mirror and then an angry little common - it was all kicking off!
The Rig that was doing the business was a Slip-D Multi Combi Rig made from OMC Terminal Tackle combined with Mainline Baits Yellow Cell Wafters over a bed of whole Boilies and Pellets soaked in Cell Smart Liquid.
Here's what you need to tie the Rig:
- Size 4 Lock Hook
- Blend 50mm Tungsten Anti-Tangle Sleeve
- Vitabitz 0.6mm Kickback Crimps
- Vitabitz Size 18 Micro Ring Swivel
- 25lb Ammo Camo Braided Hooklink
- 20lb Blend Fluorocarbon Hooklink Stiff
This was fished with a 4oz Arra Lead and 18lb Dancefloor Mainline.
A totally different Rig was used to catch my previous two forties just a week or so earlier, at 41lb and 43lb 4oz - showing that adaptability in Carp Fishing is essential!
These fish came from Grenville, a lake that is known to be notoriously weedy in places. Here, the Hinge Stiff Rig rules, and I tied mine with these extra OMC Components:
- Medium Magic Twig
- Short Chods Away
- Blend Tungsten Putty
- Blend Tungsten Tubing
- Vitabitz Tail Rubber
- Vitabitz Pin Lead Clip
I can't believe what has happened this last fortnight and really couldn't have asked for more. If you're someone looking to catch big carp, just remember to do the basics well and pick tackle you can rely on, and anything is possible...
